We got a great opportunity to chat to Audien before he comes to the San Diego House of Blues on Nov. 8th and throws down a monster set! He talks about his favorite producer at the moment, what it feels like to be nominated in the DJ Mag Top 100, and what he would be doing if he was not a world-famous DJ.
Amplified Access: What steps did you take to get to the successful position you are in?
Audien: I honestly spent and continue to spend the majority of my time concentrating on making music that is sonically refreshing and melodically uplifting. I’ve been fortunate to have a great team & ecosystem form around me to help me share & market that music.
AA: Who would you like to collab with, and why?
A: I’d be most excited about the idea of collaborating with someone in a different lane. For example Hudson Mohawke or A-Trak. I like the idea of being out of my comfort zone but alongside somebody I respect tremendously.
AA: What do you see as the future of dance music?
A: This is a tough one, but I’m encouraged that a soulful vibe is returning to dance music. Hopefully there will also be continued genre-bending and experimentation.
AA: How did it feel to be nominated in the DJ Mag Top 100?
A: Any time I’ve gotten attention on something like this, my first thought has always been: I love my fans and the people that support my music. I’m eternally indebted to them.
AA: If you weren’t DJing, what would you be doing?
A: I’d be working at a sneaker store just for the employee discount.
AA: Some of your recent big shows included Beyond Wonderland & TomorrowWorld. What were your favorite parts about playing these?
A: The size of the crowds. Nothing is more exhilarating than hearing 20, 30k people singing along to one of your tracks. Its also fun to run into other DJs and catch up.
AA: What prompts you to remix a certain song? Is there something about that song that has to stand out?
A: I guess I need to believe that I can legitimately enhance the original, and that it will align well with my style. I also like to have a good balance of remixes that are expected (Armin, Arty), and unexpected (Michael Jackson, Bruno Mars).
AA: Who is your current favorite producer at the moment and why?
A: I’m going through a big Calvin Harris renaissance at the moment. His pop sensibility is unmatched.
